Montego Bay United look to inch closer to RSPL semis
Title-holders Montego Bay United could virtually secure their place to the semi-finals of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) football competition with victory over lowly Barbican FC in this afternoon’s rescheduled clash at the Barbican Sports Complex.
Kick off is set for 3:30.
The game was originally set to be played on Sunday, but was postponed because a number of players from Montego bay United were involved in games between the Jamaica senior squad and Cuba, as well a Venezuela.
Montego Bay, who have won three of their last five games while drawing the other two, have 49 points from 29 outings and sit in third position.
A further three points will take them to 52 points to go with a fairly healthy goal difference.
Such a scenario would mean that fifth-placed Harbour View FC, who have 43 points, must win all three remaining games in the preliminary stage quite handsomely, and while the other hand, hope that Montego Bay fail to gain even a point from their three matches.
But though hosts Barbican are in last place in the 12-team RSPL standings with only 24 points, they have a big reason to fight to the last against their fancied opponents. Experiencing their first season in the nation’s top flight, they have won only once in their previous five outings and appear doomed to be one of the two sides to be relegated.
They have a burdensome -27 goal difference, which means that another loss would make it almost impossible to catch 10-placed Sporting Central FC, who have 33 points. However, a victory against Montego Bay would at least maintain the faintest flicker of hope.
In another rescheduled encounter, seventh-placed Cavalier SC, who have 40 points, welcome sixth-placed Tivoli Gardens FC (41) to Stadium East in a 5:00 pm showdown.
That game was postponed on Sunday due to a waterlogged field caused by heavy rains across the Corporate Area.
Cavalier and Tivoli Gardens have suffered from inconsistent form throughout the campaign, however both still have outside chances of pushing into the top four. To do so they will have to supplant Humble Lion FC, who occupy the vital fourth and final spot to the last-four.
Runaway leaders Arnett Gardens FC (60 points) and second-placed Waterhouse FC (54 points) have already sealed berths to the semis.
