Jennifer Edwards withdraws suit
JENNIFER EDWARDS yesterday withdrew her legal action and an application for an injunction seeking to bar her ouster as head of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).
The withdrawal of the matter in the Supreme Court came amidst comments of disapproval from Local Government Minister Noel Arscott about the non-renewal of Edwards’ contract by NSWMA Chairman Steve Ashley.
The announcement concerning Edwards’ contract followed mounting criticisms over a massive fire at the Riverton dump — smoke from which sickened people and caused great unease for residents in several parishes.
During a Jamaica House press briefing yesterday, Arscott also disclosed that a number of NSWMA board members had resigned after they themselves expressed unease with the handling of the matter. He said that new board members are being sought.
Edwards filed the application last week, seeking an order prohibiting the termination of her contract.
In the court documents she said that the decision to remove her from the post of executive director was “arbitrary, oppressive, unlawful and unreasonable”, and that the NSWMA acted in breach of the principles of natural justice.
