MBU hunt semi-final spot
DEFENDING champions Montego Bay United (MBU) could secure a semi-final spot this weekend when they play two games in the third round of the Red Stripe Premier League over four days.
Montego Bay United are in third place on 49 points and are one of five teams still in with a chance of joining Arnett Gardens (60 points) and Waterhouse (54 points), who have already qualified.
At the other end of the tables, Reno FC, the other western club, will continue their fight to avoid relegation when they meet Waterhouse on Sunday at Frome.
Reno FC must win all their remaining games if they are to retain their place in the competition next season. Should they lose, Sporting Central Academy’s victories against Boys’ Town will confirm their relegation.
Passage won’t be guaranteed, however, for Montego Bay United, as they will take on one team desperate to avoid relegation and another with ambitions of a semi-final place themselves.
Today, MBU faces last-placed Barbican in a rescheduled game after the original fixture was rained out on Sunday, and then will be home on Sunday against Cavalier SC, one of the teams with a mathematical chance of advancing.
MBU are unbeaten in their last seven games, but have only won three of those games, and have scored only three goals in their last four outings.
The last time they faced Barbican FC, they were held scoreless at home, but coach Carlos Garcia will be hoping his players will be able to get the better of their rivals.
Barbican have shown they are no walkovers, after surprising Waterhouse 2-1 at Drewsland, and MBU will not be taking them lightly.
Cavalier SC will play hard as anything but a win would end their hopes of a place in the top four.
Cavalier are coming off back-to-back wins without conceding any goals and confidence will be high, as they throw everything at an improbable run at the top four.
Cavalier were in the top three for most of the first round before a calamitous collapse saw them tumble all the way down to the bottom of the tables and were within points of the relegation zone.
