Miller takes on Guyanese Richmond in Contender Series
ANOTHER entertaining bout is carded between Jamaican Gregory Miller and Guyanese Derrick Richmond as the fifth staging of the Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum Contender Boxing Series enters its second night of action in its new season at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium at 7:30 pm today.
Following live entertainment that include two amateur fights of three rounds each, the main event will begin at approximately 9:30 pm.
It is the occasion of Miller making his professional debut while representing the Green Team of Jamaica against Guyanese journeyman boxer Richmond representing the Yellow Team (Caribbean).
Miller, the taller and older of the two boxers, stands at 5’11” aged 32, while Richmond is aged 25 and stands at 5’8″ with eight professional fights, including four wins, three losses and a draw.
While Miller is a total newcomer to the Contender Boxing Series, Richmond is not, having fought Tsetsi Davis in last season’s edition where he lost to the eventual runner-up.
He later fought the eventual winner Sakima Mullings at the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) 34 rounds of fistic fury at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The fight failed to go the distance and Mullings won as Richmond was unable to answer the bell for the third round.
Richmond, however, will be in much better shape for this contest as over the course of eight weeks during stage one, the two teams will engage in a series of weekly physical challenges. This points to a much better showing as the boxers go toe-to-toe in a valiant attempt to escape the preliminary six-round contests to go forward in search of the major share of the approximately $3 million prizes with the eventual winner pocketing an encouraging $2 million.
