Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) football cellar dwellers Barbican turned the tables on second-placed Waterhouse with a stinging 2-1 win at Drewsland on Sunday, even after going down to 10 men.
A goal in each half from Bebeto McDonald in the 36th and Ramone McGregor in the 61st garnered three valuable points for Barbican in their desperate bid to salvage their first RSPL season from ruins. Skipper Damarley Samuels replied for Waterhouse in minute 37.
Barbican went down to 10 players following the second bookable offence committed by Akino Bailey in minute 84.
The victory was, however, sweet revenge for Barbican who had Waterhouse in a similar position in the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association Jackie Bell KO final a few weeks a go, but were eventually overhauled 2-3.
It was a different story on Sunday as assistant coach Wayne Campbell noted: “This victory was more than revenge. We are striving to salvage our season. In earlier games we were leading but we were coming up short in the final 10 minutes and that was our downfall. However, with our season at a crisis point, we wanted a positive response here today and the players gave us that response. So with five more games remaining to save ourselves from relegation, this is the start we needed,” Campbell said.
Waterhouse, who have a very important clash with third-placed Montego Bay away from home next Sunday, rested a number of key players and played a number of reserved players instead.
Still, the young guns created good scoring chances but failed to breach the defence of Nicholas Campbell, who showed a safe pair of hands that denied the Waterhouse attack.
Opposing coach Anthony Patrick did not think that his team played badly: “We entered the second half on even terms but failed to make the best use of the chances that we created. As you saw we gave a number of seldom-used players an opportunity to show how they could perform and the fact that we have another five games to go there is not much to worry about.”
