Rivoli United edge Boys’ Town in RSPL
RIVOLI United ended a four-game winless slide after substitute Kemar Lawrence struck in the 65th minute to give them a 1-0 win over hosts Boys’ Town FC in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) football match at Collie Smith Sports Complex yesterday.
With the win, Rivoli United, who lost two and drew two of their previous four games, moved into provisional seventh place on 37 points.
Boys’ Town, suffering their third loss in six games, remain ninth on 30 points.
Calvert Fitzgerald, the head coach of Rivoli United, did not hide his relief. “It is very good to come to Boys’ Town and get three points. This win is a massive confidence builder for my team,” he said.
Boys’ Town Head Coach Andrew Price recited a song he has used for much of the 2014-15 RSPL campaign. “If you don’t score your chances you can’t win games,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
“We had many chances to win this game and we couldn’t put them away.”
The first half was far from a spectacle as players found it difficult to string passes together on a dusty, hard surface.
After the interval, the quality improved as Boys’ Town held onto much of the ball possession and Rivoli tried to hurt their opponents on the counter-attack.
Early in the second period Boys’ Town attacker Rafiek Thomas got a good chance when he latched onto a pin-point cross from Asrick Samuels, but his shot limped wide.
Another opportunity fell to Thomas moments later, but he swivelled and fired high from close range.
At the other end, Lawrence, who had only been on the park for two minutes, worked a quick exchange with Kemar Beckford before firing a low left-footer past Kirk Porter in goal.
Despite a valiant effort from the home team, chances became limited as Rivoli played safe at the back to secure the three points.
