Montego Bay, Harbour View in mouthwatering RSPL clash
THE race for semi-final places highlights yet another set of matches in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) football action.
In today’s match at the Wespow Park in St James, the title-holders Montego Bay United host former national champions Harbour View FC in a game scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.
Given the talent on show for either team and the shared aim of securing last-four spots, an enticing clash is on the cards.
Western Confederation giants Montego Bay, in third place with 44 points from 26 matches, have failed to consistently string together consecutive wins, though spending much of the season in the crucial top-four position.
Harbour View have endured a more rocky campaign, at one stage failing to win even once in a six-match run, while also losing three straight.
But the appointment of interim head coach Ludlow Bernard in place of Andrew Hines has coincided with back-to-back wins for the ‘Stars of the East’ over the lowly-placed pair of Barbican FC and Sporting Central FC. Those victories have taken them from sixth to fifth place and their 40 points leave them trailing fourth-placed Humble Lion by a mere point.
At the Collie Smith Sports Complex, ninth-placed Boys’ Town FC (30 points) entertain eighth-placed Rivoli United (34 points) in a 3:30 pm encounter.
Also at 3:30 pm, Barbican FC and Sporting Central FC lock horns at the Barbican Complex in a battle to avoid demotion.
Barbican, who are first-timers to the top flight, have 21 points and sit at the foot of the 12-team standings.
Sporting are in 10th with 27 points, hovering just above the two relegation places.
In yet another 3:30 start, 11th-placed Reno FC (24 points) welcome sixth-placed, semi-final aspirants Tivoli Gardens FC (38 points) to the Frome Sports Complex in Westmoreland.
Second-placed Waterhouse FC, who have won two in a row, welcome seventh-placed Cavalier SC, who have not won in their last two games, to the Drewsland Mini-Stadium.
Waterhouse have 47 points, while Cavalier, who began the 2014-15 season brightly before fading since January, have 34 points.
In the RSPL Monday Night fixture tomorrow, fourth-placed Humble Lion (41 points) host leaders Arnett Gardens FC (52 points) at the Effortville Community Centre in Clarendon. Kick-off is slated for 8:30 pm.
