Exciting finish to General Accident tennis tourney
DONOVAN Crumbie, Gordon Chuck, Andrez Coy and Ffion Fletcher all captured singles in their respective classes at the second staging of the 2015 General Accident Open Tennis Championships which ended at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston on Sunday.
Crumbie, the top seed in the Class One men’s singles, defeated second-seeded Jeremy Miller in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to come out victorious. Crumbie did not drop a single set throughout the tournament as he went on to retain his crown he won last year.
Meanwhile, in the semi-finals, Crumbie beat fourth-seed Matthew Rodriquez 6-4 with his opponent defaulting the second set, while Miller got past third-seeded Vincent Williams 6-7 (5-7 tie-breaker) 7-5, (13-11 super tie-breaker).
Fifth-seeded Gordon Chuck defeated unseeded Rafael Romero in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2 to capture the Class Two men’s singles title. Chuck, in his semi-final, upset number two-seed Barry Hazel in two straight sets 6-2, 6-4, while Romero knocked out out top seed Stephen Shirley also in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4 tie-breaker).
The men’s Class Three singles was won by top seed Andrez Coy in an exciting final coming back from a set down to win 5-7, 7-6 (7-3 tie-breaker), 7-5 over fourth-seeded Scott Jones. Meanwhile, in the semi-finals, Coy beat unseeded Leon Jamieson in straight sets 6-3, 7-5, while Jones dispatched unseeded Jermaine Scott in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Top seed Ffion Fletcher cruised past second-seed Phadria Kepple in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to win the women’s Class Three singles title. Fletcher in her semi-final beat third-seed Imega McNab, while Kepple defeated Jamaican Olympian Bridgitte Foster-Hylton in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in her semi-final.
