Electoral Commission to conduct petition signing in Portmore
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Electoral Commission of Jamaica says it will facilitate a petition signing in Portmore on Saturday, fulfilling a statutory requirement for the signatures of at least seven per cent of residents to be collected for the municipal boundaries to be adjusted.
The ECJ said in a news release Friday that currently, citizens of portions of Greater Portmore North and Portmore Pines Divisions are not able to vote for mayor of the municipality because parts of those divisions fall outside of the current municipal boundaries.
This, it said, was the case after two constituencies were added to St Catherine following the island wide constituency boundaries review in 2010.
The commission said 12 centres will be located across St Catherine Southern, St Catherine South Eastern and St Catherine East Central to facilitate the signing.
It also said based on the current voters’ list, there are 92,567 electors living in the proposed area of the municipality.
This means a minimum of 6,480 persons is required to sign the petition in order to achieve the seven per cent statutory requirement to have the boundaries adjusted.
