Boys’ Town edge Humble Lion to snap 11-game unbeaten run
Boys’ Town ended Humble Lion’s 11-game unbeaten streak with a 1-0 win in their Red Stripe Premier League game at Collie Smith Drive yesterday. National Under-20 striker Shamar Nicholson, who was introduced in the 65th minute, nodded home a Rafeik Thomas cross in the 79th minute.
It was a wonderful piece of counter – attack and a deadly blow to a Humble Lion outfit that was searching for that elusive goal. After raiding the Boys’ Town area, Andrew Vanzie collected a ball just outside the box and his left-footer looked threatening, but was well held by goalkeeper Kirk Porter.
The Red Brigade custodian then, in one motion, released a long ball down the right flank which saw Thomas shrug off a recovering Vanzie, before picking out the lanky Nicholson, who looped his header over goalkeeper Damion Crooks and into the net.
It was three crucial points for Boys’ Town in their relegation fight, which enabled them to leapfrog the inactive Sporting Central into ninth spot on 26 points. The Andrew Price-coached Boys’ Town ended their twogame losing run to notch just their seventh win from 24 games, and eased their relegation fears for the time being.
They are now five points above the dreaded drop zone. Meanwhile, Humble Lion, who ended Arnett Gardens’ 11-game unbeaten run, were also stopped in their tracks at 11 games, but remained provisionally in fourth spot on 35 points. It was a bad day at Collie Smith for Humble Lion as they also lost head coach Donovan Duckie, who was dismissed from the bench in the 70th minute by referee Dwight Royal.
The Clarendon outfit can be surpassed today by either or both Tivoli Gardens and Harbour View in fifth and sixth spots on 35 and 34 points, respectively. Tivoli Gardens will host bottomplaced Barbican, while Harbour View tackle Sporting Central Academy. In another game yesterday, Rivoli United battled from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw with champions Montego Bay United at Bramwell Clarke Complex.
Goals by Kashief Brown and Fabian McCarthy in the 43rd and 53rd minutes, respectively, gave Montego Bay United the comfortable advantage, but Keith Wright pulled one back for Rivoli United in the 75th minute before Cory Burke earned a share of the points in the 90th+3 minute.
It was a crucial point for Rivoli United as they joined Harbour View on 34 points, but remained in seventh on goal difference, while Montego Bay United stayed third on 40 points and missed a chance to close the gap significantly on the leaders who clash today. Arnett Gardens are on 45 points, while Waterhouse are second with 41 points. In the late kick-off at the Stadium East field, home team Cavalier SC defeated Reno FC 2-0 courtesy of goals by Oshane Jenkins and Girvon Brown in the 41st and 77th minutes, respectively.
Cavalier are now up to 33 points, but remained in eighth spot, just two points outside the play-off zone, while Reno stayed in 11th spot on 21 points and in grave danger of being relegated.
