Mouthwatering RSPL battles on the plate for Ash Wednesday
Fans of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) have Ash Wednesday football to look forward to when mid-week action unfolds today.
In a battle of teams with realistic chances of securing places to the semi-finals, title-holders Montego Bay United travel to face Rivoli United at the Bramwell Clarke Sports Complex in Ewarton, St Catherine.
Kick-off is slated for 4:00 in the afternoon.
Montego Bay, though not as commanding as many would expect, have managed to stay in top-four contention for most of the campaign. Despite only winning once in their last five matches — a 2-0 success over Boys’ Town FC on Sunday — they are third in the 12-team standings with 39 points from 23 games.
Rivoli, on a whole, have had a favourable season so far though they were dented by a recent bad patch. However, a win and a draw in their last two matches suggest stability has returned somewhat. Despite being in seventh place, their 33 points means they are only a victory away from sneaking into fourth place, providing other results favour them.
At the Collie Smith Complex, 10th-placed Boys’ Town (23 points) host in-form fourth-placed team Humble Lion FC (35 points), starting at 3:00 pm.
Once dangling in one of the two relegation places, Humbe Lion have gone on a 11-game unbeaten run which has included eight wins. The Clarendon-based Lion lead Tivoli due to a better goal-difference.
Regardless of their form, Humble Lion will have to do well to extend the streak to 12 games against Boys’ Town, who have often proven they can be quite a handful on their home patch.
In the 5:00 pm game at Stadium East, hosts Cavalier SC take on Westmoreland-based Reno FC. Cavalier are eighth with 30 points, while relegation-threatened former national champions Reno are in 11th place with 21 points. Reno are only ahead of cellar team Barbican FC due to a superior goal-difference.
The other three midweek games will be contested tomorrow.
The most fancied of those clashes will see second-placed Waterhouse FC (41 points) visiting the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex to meet frontrunners Arnett Gardens FC (45 points), beginning at 6:00 pm.
Both teams suffered losses in respective previous outings. Arnett, who recently went on a 10-game winning run, have garnered only a point from their three last matches, which included a 0-2 loss away to Sporting Central FC on Sunday.
Waterhouse have won three of their last five matches, but a 0-1 reverse to visitors Tivoli Gardens FC in RSPL Monday Night action, has slowed their train.
At 3:00 pm, fifth-placed Tivoli Gardens (35 points) welcome struggling Barbican FC (21 points) to the Edward Seaga Sports Complex.
At 6:30 pm, sixth-placed Harbour View FC (34 points) entertain ninth-placed Sporting Central (24 points) at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium.
