Montego Bay Utd quench goal thirst at last
TUCKER, St James — Montego Bay United snapped their six-game scoreless run with a comfortable 2-0 win over strugglers Boys’ Town in their opening third round Red Stripe Premier League game at Wespow Park yesterday.
Troy Smith and Kashief Brown, neither of whom was on the Montego Bay United roster when they last scored in December last year, got the goals in the second half for the home team.
Montego Bay moved to 39 points, two behind second-placed Waterhouse FC, who play tonight.
Montego Bay United’s goal drought had gone over 600 minutes when Smith’s free kick took a big deflection and flew past Boys’ Town goalkeeper Kirk Porter’s right hand into the far corner.
And then Brown, who played for Green Pond High in the ISSA daCosta Cup, marked his first appearance in the competition when he made it 2-0 nine minutes later.
A relieved Montego Bay United coach Carlos Garcia told the Jamaica Observer the team “was more focused today and wanted to get back to scoring”. He added that he was not worried about the team’s form during the slump.
“I have had enough experience at this level, so I was not too worried when we were not scoring, I was trying to get the players not to be too obsessed with getting a goal and in the second half they calmed down a bit and the goals came,” Garcia said.
Montego Bay United got off to a fast start with Ricardo Morris, Dino Williams and Omar Gordon pushing the Boys’ Town team back, but failed to get any rewards for their industry.
Williams just missed opening the scoring in the 45th minute when he turned and shot just inches over the crossbar.
They continued creating chances in the second half when Fabian McCarthy curled a ball just wide of the right post in the 49th minute.
But it was Smith, the former national defender, who unlocked the Boys’ Town goal in the 63rd minute. His left-footed free kick was curled around the Boys’ Town wall, but hit a player and deflected into the far corner of the goal.
Brown, who replaced Williams in the 79th minute, made his presence felt three minutes later when he knocked the ball home at the far post after another substitute Allan Ottey had sent a stinging low cross into the area.
