RSPL third preliminary round kicks off today
THE Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) football competition enters its third and final round of preliminary games today, and plenty of focus will turn to Juici Park in Clarendon where Sporting Central FC host highly-fancied Arnett Gardens FC.
Kick-off is set for 3:00 pm.
Arnett Gardens, front-runners in the overall points standing after a sizzling run of victories during the second round, have 45 points. But their inability to win in their last two games has seen the chasing pack cut into the lead.
Sporting Central, who earlier in the season were tucked in mid-table positions, are now floundering in 11th place in the 12-team standing with 21 points, trailing Reno FC due to an inferior goal difference.
Sporting have lost four of their last five games. Given those run of results, Arnett should be looking to this clash against Sporting as the ideal chance to return to winnings ways.
Reigning champions Montego Bay United play hosts to Boys’ Town FC at the WesPow Park in St James, starting at 3:00 pm.
Montego Bay have hit a rut of late, failing to win in any of their last five encounters while losing twice and drawing three times. Despite that poor run of form, they hold third position with 36 points.
Boys’ Town, lying in ninth place with 23 points, have suffered from indifferent form and are perilously close to the relegation zone.
At the Effortville Community Centre in Clarendon, the home team Humble Lion FC will oppose Reno FC in a game set to commence at 3:00 pm.
Humble Lion, unbeaten during their last 10 games while winning on seven occasions, are fifth with 32 points. Former Premier League winners Reno, desperately fighting to avoid one of two relegation spots, have not lost in their last five outings and are 10th with 21 points.
Also at 3:00 pm, newly promoted Barbican FC, who are last in the standing with 20 points, entertain sixth-placed Rivoli United (32 points) at the Barbican Complex in St Andrew.
In the late game which begins at 6:30 pm, fourth-placed Harbour View FC (34 points) welcome eighth-placed Cavalier SC (27 points) to the Harbour View Mini-Stadium.
In the Monday Night live televised encounter, a battle of Kingston & St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) titans looms at the Drewsland Mini-Stadium, starting at 8:30.
Hosts Waterhouse FC (41 points), second in the standing, will take on seventh-placed Tivoli Gardens FC (32 points). Waterhouse, who were losing finalists in last year’s RSPL, have won three of their last five games to close the gap on Arnett Gardens.
Fellow former league champions Tivoli, enduring an inconsistent 2014-15 season so far, have won two times, drawn twice and lost once over their last five matches.
