MBU welcome TG as RSPL returns
AFTER last week’s break which allowed the playing of the Jackie Bell Knockout semi-final matches, the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) competition returns to full swing with the final set of matches in Round Two.
In arguably the most anticipated clash today, champions Montego Bay United welcome former winners Tivoli Gardens FC to WesPow Park in St James, starting at 3:00 pm.
Montego Bay, third in the 12-team RSPL standings with 36 points from 21 games, have been in a rut of late, failing to win any of their last five outings.
Tivoli, who hold seventh position with 29 points, have suffered an inconsistent campaign so far and the results in their last five games provide some insight. They have won two, drawn two and lost once during that time.
In another expected humdinger beginning at 4:00 pm, sixth-placed Rivoli United (29 points) host fourth-placed Harbour View FC (34 points) at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.
At the Juici Park in Clarendon, Sporting Central FC take on visitors Waterhouse FC at 3:00 pm.
Sporting Central are 10th in the table with 21 points, while Waterhouse lie second with 38. Despite the massive gap between them in the table, spectators could be offered a treat as both teams have the tendency to play attacking football.
At the Barbican Complex in St Andrew, a battle of promoted teams will ensue. Barbican FC, first-time entrants to the RSPL, take aim at former Premier League winners Reno FC, starting at 3:00 pm. Both sides advanced to the nation’s top flight after qualifying through the All-island Confederation Play-offs.
Barbican are last in the standings with 19 points, while Reno are one place above with 20.
At 4:30 pm, eighth-placed Cavalier SC (24 points) entertain ninth-placed Boys’ Town FC (23 points) at Stadium East.
In the RSPL Monday Night live televised encounter at 8:30, leaders Arnett Gardens FC travel to Effortville Community Centre in Clarendon to face fifth-placed Humble Lion FC.
Arnett, who have won 10 of their last 11 games, sit easy at the top of the pile with 45 points, while Humble Lion, resurgent after a dismal start to the 2014-15, have 29 points.
