Calabar hunt basketball double at GC Foster College
CALABAR go in search of another double when they meet St Jago and Herbert Morrison in the 2014/2015 ISSA All-Island National Basketball Championships’ High Schoolboys’ Under-16 and Under-19 finals, respectively, this afternoon at the GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sports, Spanish Town.
The Under-16 final between Calabar High and St Jago High will be played at 4:00 pm, while the Under-19 final between Herbert Morrison High and Calabar is set for 5:30.
There will also be two new champions as St George’s College, winners of the Under-16, and Muschett High, defending Under-19 champions, were eliminated in the play-offs.
Calabar reached the Under-16 final by defeating Manchester High 41-38 points, while St Jago turned back Knox College 53-33 in their semi-finals.
In the Under-19 semi-finals, Calabar beat St Jago 53-50, while Herbert Morrison swept Ardenne High 71-51 points.
After accomplishing the double in the Southern Basketball Conference (SBC-Urban Area) leagues last month, the Ludlow Barker-coached Calabar will be looking to repeat the feat and create history for their school.
Calabar will be meeting the St Catherine-based St Jago for the second time in the season, and they will have the advantage as they have beaten their rivals in the SBC Under-16 final last month.
“We can win both finals, but it is going to take a lot of work and concentration from the players. Although we have beaten St Jago in the Under-16 final, we cannot take it for granted, as they will be coming at us and going all out to avenge the defeat,” Barker said.
To lead the way for another victory for Calabar should be key players Jordan Kellier, and Kyle Lawrence, while St Jago would look to their leading players Lushane Wilson, Jumario Grant, Chevaughn Davis, Alex Jackson and Sheddon McDonald for victory.
Barker will have another challenge on his hands when he faces Western Basketball Conference (WBC) champions Herbert Morrison in the Under-19 final.
For that game, he will be relying heavily on his key shooters Jevaughn Faulder, Maliek McCarthy, Shemar Shand and Javardo Simmonds, to hold off the scoring ability of the Montego Bay-based Herbert Morrison late charge.
Alwayne Beadle, Gregory Wallace and Rakique Grant will spearhead the Herbert Morrison charge.
Meanwhile, Knox College will face Manchester High in the third-place play-off in the Under-16 set to start at 1:00, while St Jago High and Ardenne High will be involved in the Under-19 consolation scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm.
