What they Say! – Kevin Williams
When did you start your career as a groom?
My career as a groom started in 2000 but I was in the sport from a younger age as my father (Percy Williams) was a horseman. I would go to the track when school was over and just watch the horses, and that was when I really developed a love for the sport.
Which horse was your first winner?
My first winner was Buaine with Andron Findlay going over a mile. I was so happy that day as this horse was lame. He had some problems and I took my time with him in getting him ready to race. It was a great feeling when he won as I felt I was on the moon as my hard work and dedication really paid off.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
Passadoble with Dane Nelson at 23-1 for trainer Anthony Nunes. This win was sweet as honey.
Which is the best horse that you have groomed?
Without a doubt Relampago is the best horse that I have groomed so far. Relampago is a very good horse with a lot of talent. I lost last year’s 2000 Guineas with him but he came back and won the Derby and St Leger in commanding fashion, which really highlighted both our careers. Winning the Derby with him was a very special day for me, and then winning the St Leger made it even nicer. I cried the day when Relampago lost the Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup.
Which is the best horse that you have seen race at Caymanas Park
I have seen a lot of talented racehorse’s at Caymanas Park. There was Prince Consort, and Eros is another good one. Eros was a cut above the other horses, he has some records that I think will never be broken. There was also Milligram and The Viceroy. But to me I would give the edge to The Viceroy. The Viceroy was gelded two weeks before the 2000 Guineas and still won the race with ease. He was a good horse.
Who influenced your career the most?
Everyone has been good to me from since I am in racing. My father (Percy Williams) influenced me the most. His guidance, encouragement, support and teaching have been the driving force behind me. Special thanks must be given to Anthony Nunes.
