Rochelle Fraser aiming for the sky
DESPITE beating the field by 1.28 metres, Rochelle Fraser, who won the Class One shot put at the Big Shot Meet last Saturday, was disappointed with her performance.
Fraser, who is expected to once again lead Edwin Allen High’s defence of their ISSA Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships title this year, won with a throw of 14.07m ahead of teammate Janell Fullerton with 12.79m, and Vere Technical’s Kiona Bradshaw with 12.60m.
“I was not pleased with that because I was aiming for 15m,” said Fraser, who will be competing for her school for the final year.
“Today was a good start for me. I am working very hard, so I expect these results,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
Fraser, who captured the Under-20 shot put and discus gold medals at the 2014 Carifta Games in Martinique with throws of 13.63m and 46.90m, is aiming higher this season.
“My expectation this year is to throw 55m in the discus or 15m in the shot put,” she revealed to the Observer.
However, that plan was put on hold last Saturday as she could only manage third in the Class One discus with a throw of 47.80m. The event was won by Shanice Love of Excelsior High with 47.93m, and Shadae Lawrence of Hydel High second with 47.89m.
Fraser had earlier won the discus and shot put events at the Jamaica College Meet on January 10 with throws of 50.40m and 14.96m.
“I know it is going to be difficult with the bigger girls, but I will work harder to achieve my goals,” she reiterated.
Fraser is the Class One shot put record holder with 13.70m and has already surpassed that mark this season. She has clearly sent out a stern warning that she will be the one to beat again this year.
