Visit again, Lloyd Bogle
Dear Editor,
Thanks, Jamaica Observer! The Lloyd Bogle case, brought to our attention by the Observer, was one of the hottest topics last week. The incident was a reminder of what can happen due to negligence and being unaware.
As simple as it appeared, what happened could’ve happened to anyone. He could’ve been anyone’s father, relative, friend. It was indeed a very moving story, and thanks to the Observer so many came on board to assist, namely the British High Commissioner, Jamaican High Commissioner to London, and even our own foreign affairs ministry. There were ordinary citizens too, in Britain and Jamaica, many on social media, who went to work to help. Not to mention the lady in Jamaica, a stranger to Bogle, who gave him food and shelter during the few months he was stranded here, not knowing anyone because he left Jamaica decades ago as a child.
It goes to show there is power in our humanity. No good deed goes unnoticed. The Observer should be commended in particular for how it covered the story, and brought this desperate plight to the attention of the public. A situation such as this could’ve caused a nervous breakdown. Fortunately, Bogle got his visa in the end and can return to Britain to begin the process to sort out his affairs and legal status. We hope he will take with him all the positives in this story, and how strangers, some in high places, were so quick to assist. We hope once he has his affairs sorted out he will consider returning for another visit to his homeland. He will enjoy it even more the next time.
