Champions MoBay, Rivoli cross swords in midweek fixture
TITLE-HOLDERS Montego Bay United will test the mettle of Rivoli United when the two meet in an enticing Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) fixture at the Spanish Town Prison Oval today.
Kick-off is set for 4:00 pm.
Rivoli have been in sparkling form, winning their last four matches and lie fifth with 28 points. They only trail fourth-placed Waterhouse due to an inferior goal difference. The tall midfielder Ross Burton scored the winner in the 1-0 win over Reno FC on Sunday and has notched two goals in as many games, but it is his teammate Cory Burke who has grabbed most of the headlines this season.
The almost equally long-limbed Burke has scored 10 RSPL goals playing in a free attacking role. Montego Bay will do well to keep both quiet.
Montego Bay have also been in solid form, winning three times and drawing twice in their last five games to sit second in the 12-team standings on 33 points from 17 matches. They also have serious firepower upfront and will be hard to suppress.
In the 6:00 pm encounter at the Drewsland Stadium, the hosts Waterhouse FC will aim to end their losing slump when they oppose another out-of-form team Reno FC.
Both teams have lost their last three games and are also identical in their previous five outings, losing four times and drawing once. But Waterhouse’s strong form earlier in the season means they hang on to a top-four spot with 28 points.
Reno, on the other hand, are 11th with 15 points, but for this game they are likely to welcome the return of striker Craig Foster from injury. Foster has fired in 13 goals to lead the league’s scoring chart.
In another clash of teams gasping for air, promoted Barbican FC take on Humble Lion FC at the Barbican Complex in St Andrew at 3:00 pm. Barbican are in the cellar spot with 15 points, while ninth-placed Humble Lion (19), who have won two straight, look for only their sixth victory of the season.
At the Juici Park in Clarendon, the hosts Sporting Central FC take on Harbour View FC at 3 o’ clock. Sporting are eighth with 20 points, while Harbour View are third with 29.
Another pair of games are on tomorrow. At 3:00 pm, 10th-placed Boys’ Town FC (16 points) welcome sixth-placed Tivoli Gardens FC (24 points) to the Collie Smith Complex.
At 4:30 pm, Cavalier SC, who are seventh with 22 points, entertain league leaders Arnett Gardens FC at the Stadium East. Arnett, currently on a stunning seven-game winning streak, have 35 points.
