Sunshine Girls bubbly ahead of England test
Head coach for the Sunshine Girls Minneth Reynolds says she is confident that her players will do well against England in the upcoming three-test series, scheduled for January 10, 11 and 13 at the National Indoor Sports Centre (NISC) in Kingston.
“The team is confident and we are looking for a good test series against England starting this weekend. The girls are really excited and are looking forward to a good clash against their arch-rivals. They will be coming really hard and so we have to be ready for them,” Reynolds said.
“The girls are in good health and they are ready to compete at their best because only your best is good enough. A series win will surely boost the girls confidence in their 2015 campaign as a part of our build-up to Netball World Cup to be held in Sydney Australia in August,” she added.
Reynolds also said that she is happy with the preparation leading up to the series.
“I expect the girls to win this series as they really looked good in their preparation leading up to this clash. They have been doing a lot of hard work during training sessions such as physical workout as well technical skills. They have also kept focus on their fitness. Overall, they have been doing well and so I expect from them nothing less than a series win,” Reynolds told the Jamaica Observer.
“I expect them to show their true potential and fighting spirit as at the moment (they) believe in themselves that they can get the job done. Once you put your mind to something and believe you can achieve it, then you will and the girls believe in that,” she noted.
England, who are coming off a two-test series win against fifth-ranked Malawi, are ranked at number three, while Jamaica are at four and the English will be looking to avenge their loss to Jamaica in the bronze medal match at the Commonwealth Games last August.
The last time both team met was in the Fast5 tournament in Auckland, New Zealand last November where the English edged Jamaica 31-30 in the bronze-medal play-off game.
“They are a very good team, but we will be ready for them. They defeated us the last time we met, but we have identified some problems and have corrected them as we are a better team now… well focused and ready to go.
“We will have a training camp for the rest of the week and some warm-up games before the series start. Netball is a team game and we are a united team and so we are ready,” she ended.
Meanwhile, president of Netball Jamaica Marva Bernard also expects the Sunshine Girls to win the series and she urged support for the girls as they go for glory.
“I expect a very exciting game, a hard-fought game. I expect both teams to have an intense battle as this is the last time that they will face each other before the World Cup. This series will probably be the best match-up between both teams, but I expect our girls to come out on top.
“I also encourage everyone to come out and support our Sunshine Girls as I am looking for a full arena over the three days of competition,” the president said.
