Forrest strikes late for TG to punish old club Waterhouse
Substitute Weston Forrest poured more misery on his former club Waterhouse FC netting the winner for Tivoli Gardens in the 90th minute in their Red Stripe Premier League game at the Edward Seaga Stadium yesterday.
Forrest, who replaced Kaemmar Daley in the 69th minute, intercepted a poor throw from goalkeeper Kelso Cousins and fired home from a deflection in the scrappy affair in which neither team deserved to win.
The moment Forrest began warming up there were echoes across the ground that he could make the difference in a dull game in which neither team could find the spark.
It was Tivoli Gardens’ second consecutive win, which moved them to 24 points and provisionally into sixth spot. Their head coach Alvin Shaw was pleased for the victory which kept his team in striking distance of a top-four play-off spot.
“The training this week was very intense and the players stuck to the task. Everyone carried out their duties today and I really have to congratulate them,” said Shaw.
Meanwhile, Waterhouse’s poor run continued as they were losing for the third consecutive match and their fourth in their last five games. They remained on 28 points and can be surpassed by Harbour View, who were scheduled to play cavalier in a late kick-off.
Only a few weeks ago, Waterhouse were leading the table but now things seemed to have gone in a hurry. For yesterday’s game, the Drewsland team had only two substitutes on the bench.
Immediately following the final whistle, club president Ricky Chin had an impromptu meeting on the infield with his staff for approximately 15 minutes and he was clearly not amused.
Head coach Anthony Patrick explained to the Jamaica Observer that his team was depleted by injuries and they should be back by mid-January to full strength.
“As you can see a lot of injuries have been hitting us. The youngsters gave a good performance, but a simple mistake cost us the game,” said Patrick.
Meanwhile, leaders Montego Bay United were held to a 0-0 draw by Barbican FC at WesPow Park and moved a point clear atop of the tables on 33 points. Barbican remained at the bottom of the 12-team league on 15.
At the Spanish Town Prison Oval, a fourth-minute strike by Ross Burton gave Rivoli United a 1-0 win over Reno which propelled them to 28 points, the same as third-placed Waterhouse.
It was Reno’s seventh defeat in their last eight games since winning the All-island Flow Champions Cup and they remained in 11th spot on 15 points.
