Barbican hold MBU goalless
TUCKER, St James — Barbican FC’s coach Raymond Beckford got what he wanted when they left Kingston to travel to western Jamaica to face leaders Montego Bay United in their Red Stripe Premier League second round game at WesPow Park on Sunday.
The teams shared the points as the last-placed team held the leaders to an error-filled 0- 0 draw, snapping the home team’s six-game win streak at WesPow Park this season. Montego Bay United inched ahead to 33 points to take over the lead in the points’ table, while Barbican FC improved to 15 points, tied with Reno FC, but are still at the foot of the table on goal difference.
“We wanted to prove that they could play and compete with the best teams and that is what we did today, a clean sheet and a point,” Beckford told the Jamaica Observer after the game. Asked his opinion on the low quality of the game, he said, “We did not need it to be pretty, just a point away (from home) and we can start building off that.”
The point did not sit well with the Montego Bay United coach Carlos Garcia, who thought maybe the number of games has caught up with his small squad. Montego Bay United started a number of players out of position as Dino Williams, Omar Gordon and Jermaine Woozencroft were all away seeking contracts at various clubs, while a number of other regular starters were absent through injuries. Additionally, two new players transferred to the club and whom they had hoped would have started yesterday — Ricardo Morris and Troy Smith — had not yet completed registration.
“We had no energy today,” he said, “we have played a lot of games and we just lost our three best strikers, but we got chances…but did not make use of them.” He said they did not underestimate Barbican despite their position in the table. “They held Waterhouse for a long time not so long ago and they are a good defensive team.”
The teams combined for a handful of wasted scoring chances as with Williams and Gordon away, Ottey was Montego Bay’s pointman and he had an off day.
Mario McDonald had chances in both halves for Barbican, but he was blocked after getting behind the Montego Bay United defence in the 10th minute, then headed wide from four yards out in the 30th minute.
