Oh, sweet honey
HONEY, the sweet substance produced by the honey bee, is a natural source of energy for the human body. It predominantly contains glucose and fructose in water, with traces of other sugars like sucrose and maltose. It also contains amino acids, enzymes, organic acids, and minerals, and is considered to be a natural, healthier alternative to sugar from cane.
The health benefits of honey are often overlooked due to its delicious taste and its natural performance as a sweetener.
Trelawny Premium Apiaries, in collaboration with Clamar’s Holistic Health Centre at King’s Plaza and Health and Nutrition Ltd at Sovereign Centre, on November 20, sought to raise awareness about these benefits in a public education campaign, which was held under the theme ‘Life is sweet… Let it Bee’.
“Honey is referred to [as] nature’s skincare,” said Carby. “Manufacturers have used honey in everything from hand lotions and moisturisers to bar soaps and bubble baths.
“One reason they use honey is for its wholesome, all-natural image. More and more, consumers are demanding cosmetics and personal care products made from natural ingredients,” he continued. “In the case of honey, however, image is just the beginning.”
Honey is a humectant, Carby said, which means it attracts and retains moisture. This makes honey a natural fit in a variety of moisturising products, including cleansers, creams, shampoos, and conditioners, he added.
Honey is also a great natural remedy for many common ailments.
“It is a natural immune system builder, with both antioxidant and antibacterial properties, which can help to improve the digestive system and fight diseases,” an excited Carby said. “It is also a natural energy booster with a hearty source of carbohydrates, which provide strength and energy to our bodies.”
He also declared that honey is nature’s cough suppressant.
“Honey has been used for centuries to help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with the common cold. For relief of the irritating symptoms, try a spoonful of honey to soothe and coat your throat,” Carby shared.
Several customers were able to learn a few things about honey as the day progressed and Trelawny Premium Apiaries was able to find out some of the reasons customers use honey.
“I use it to relieve hangovers. Whenever I have too much fun at the party and consume too much alcohol, I usually use a few tablespoons of honey, which is packed with fructose, which helps speed up my body’s metabolism…” customer Norman shared.
“I use it on my face and that is why my face is so smooth and glowing. I use the raw honey and wash it off with warm water, it is a fantastic moisturiser,” shared Christopher, another customer.
“I use honey in my hair as a natural conditioner,” yet another customer, Jamilia, said.
More than 100 brochures, which have information about the benefits of honey and the production process, were distributed. The day’s events also included sampling of honey.
