Wellington delivers from bench for desperate Tivoli
An inspired substitution by head coach Alvin Shaw propelled Tivoli Gardens to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over champions Montego Bay United in their Red Stripe Premier League match at the Edward Seaga Stadium yesterday.
A stunning thir-minute volley by Dino Williams gave Montego Bay United the lead but Weston Forrest pulled Tivoli Gardens level in the 51st minute.
The stage was now set for an interesting finale and the script couldn’t have been written better for young substitute Rodico Wellington, who came on in the 77th minute and found the winner five minutes later in minute 82nd.
Wellington came on for discarded national midfielder Kaemmar Daley to the disappointment of most fans. But they were left singing his praises following a brilliant goal that secured three crucial points for the struggling Tivoli Gardens.
In fact, with his first touch, he sent Navion Boyd clean through on goal, but the former national striker fired agonisingly wide of the upright.
Having just being selected to the National Under-20 set up, Wellington collected a ball on the right flank just inside the box and dismissed two defenders before letting fly a left-footer that sailed past the outstretched hand of goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett.
The youngster, who could have played another year for Denham Town High in the Manning Cup, raced to the touchline and embraced his coach Shaw.
“He is one to look out for in the future. I see him as a player that will be leaving this country soon. He reminds me of a Jermaine Johnson. There is a lot in store for him,” Shaw told the Jamaica Observer.
Tivoli Gardens, who were winning their fourth game from 11 matches, provisionally moved into fifth spot with 15 points, while Montego Bay United stayed on 16.
Meanwhile, promoted Barbican FC registereed their second win of the season clipping Reno 1-0 at Frome and Cavalier whipped Boys’ Town 3-1 at the first of two games at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
