Fired up MoBay blow away Arnett 5-0
TUCKER, St James — Stung by criticisms after their loss to Reno FC in the Flow Champions Cup final on Sunday night at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, Red Stripe Premier League champions Montego Bay United (MBU) took out their frustration on Arnett Gardens on Wednesday trouncing them 5-0 at WesPow Park, the largest margin of victory in the Premier League so far this season.
Allan Ottey scored two, while Dino Williams, Graeme Green and Lesly St Fleur had one each as MBU won back-to-back games in the Premier League. The win pushed them to 16 points and into fourth place, replacing Arnett who dropped to seventh place after losing their fourth game in their last five starts.
On Sunday, MBU came back twice to draw level with Reno FC from 2-0 and 3-2 down, only to lose in time added on.
Coach Carlos Garcia said it was “very difficult to get them ready for the game as they were very disappointed with losing”.
Garcia told the Jamaica Observer he thinks the fans have been too hard on the players.
“I think what we felt was that people were too hard on us and this team deserved much more credit that we have been getting… we won today (Wednesday) again to prove we are a good team and today the team wanted to show everyone the type of players they are,” he noted.
Garcia said he was not only pleased the team played well and won on Wednesday, but that they dominated the game.
“Things went very good, some time we get a lot of chances and today we could have been up by two or three after 15 minutes, but we had patience and we were able to score later despite the tiredness of the players,” he explained.
While he was happy with the team’s form, Garcia warned against complacency.
“I think the team’s form is good, but we have to go forward, we can’t think because we won today (Wednesday) everything is good and make the same mistakes that cost us the game on Sunday,” he said.
Arnett Gardens’ coach Jerome Waite had no excuses for his team’s below-par performance. “We started out tentative, slowly, not the usual way we start…the team just did not look themselves today.” he said.
After the long trip from Kingston, Waite said he expected the players to get tired after about 75 minutes, but did not expect the lacklustre effort. “They did not come to play; we were flat and did not dominate in any department of the game.”
The home team were all over Arnett from the opening whistle and Jerome Haughton shot off the base of the right upright in the second minute before Dwayne Ambusley shot high five minutes later from inside the 18-yard box.
Dino Williams, who scored five times in three games, opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when the Arnett defence allowed him space and he controlled the ball just inside the box, turned nicely, before firing it past goalkeeper Damion Hyatt.
After two powerful shots from St Fleur just missed the goal, Ottey, whose three previous goals came in a 4-0 win over Boys’ Town, doubled the MBU lead just before half-time. He dribbled down the right flank, got behind the defenders and, with Hyatt at his mercy, beat the goalkeeper at his near left post in the 44th minute.
Any hopes Arnett had of coming back into the game died in the 75th minute when Green finished off a patient build-up with a rocker from outside the area that flew past Hyatt into the goal.
With Arnett giving up all hopes, Ottey got a second in the 79th minute when St Fleur picked him out with a pass and he dribbled down the left side and this time curled the ball around Hyatt into the goal.
Arnett got maybe the best scoring chance in the game in the 86th minute when Leon Strickland got a ball inches from the goal line, and all he needed to do was tap the ball across the line, but a lunging Jacomeno Barrett blocked the shot.
With two minutes to go, St Fleur finished off the scoring with his rocket-like shot that gave Hyatt no chance.
