Pride, Jamaica play to farcical draw in rain-ravaged match
LUCAS STREET, Barbados (CMC) — Predictably, Barbados Pride and Jamaica Franchise could only eke out a lame draw in their rain-wrecked second- round match in the WICB Professional Cricket League here on Monday.
With play finally getting underway for the first time in four days, only 43.4 overs were possible on the final day at the Windward Sports Club, and both teams meandered their way to whatever points they could salvage.
Sent in, Jamaica rattled up 111 for four declared off 40 overs, with Shacaya Thomas stroking a fluent 59 off 73 balls, with six fours.
Fast bowler Jason Holder was Barbados’ best bowler with two for 29.
In reply, Barbados slumped to six for two before also declaring, to deny the Jamaicans a bowling point.
Barbados finished with four points and Jamaica, three, the best that could be done in a game which saw the first three days abandoned without a ball bowled because of torrential rain across the island.
Barbados sit fourth in the standings on 12 points while the Jamaicans are third on 19 points, still riding on their win over Windward Islands in the first round.
A wet outfield prevented any play in the morning session and once play got started at 1:30 pm, it was evident that there was not much either side could have reaped from the game.
Jamaica were given a start of 24 for the first wicket by Thomas and John-Ross Campbell who made four from his 18 balls at the crease, before becoming the first victim of the game when he played on to the lanky Holder.
New batsman Nkrumah Bonner never got going and managed just five in 24 minutes before giving Holder his second wicket when he edged to the safe hands of Ashley Nurse at second slip, with the score on 40 for two.
Test batsman Jermaine Blackwood never settled and had struck a six in 10 balls when he was caught close-in by Omar Phillips off left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn.
Thomas and captain Tamar Lambert combined in a 28-run stand to rally the innings, with the right-handed Thomas continuing to play positively while Lambert was patient, striking three fours in an unbeaten 21 that lasted 74 balls and 1-1/4 hours.
Off-spinner Nurse entered the attack and claimed Thomas, playing back and across to perish lbw at 87 for four, and with nothing left in the innings really, Jamaica declared their innings in search of bowling points.
They set back Barbados early when Test bowler Jerome Taylor removed left-handed opener Omar Phillips lbw for a first-ball ‘duck’ off the second ball of the innings, as the batsman played back and across.
New batsman Shai Hope followed soon afterward, lasting just 11 balls before young pacer Marquino Mindley had him caught at first slip for five with the score on six.
In a strategic move, Barbados then declared their innings to deny Jamaica a bowling point.
Jamaica will now head to Port of Spain to take on Trinidad and Tobago Red Force while Barbados travel to Guyana for their third- round match against Jaguars starting Friday.
