Make the most of your job — even when you want to quit
IMPRESSING your boss can be an uphill task, and you may be counting the days until you can tell him to take this job and shove it. But until then, and regardless of the position you hold in the organisation, making the most of the job is what matters.
Cheryll Campbell, owner and human resource consultant at HR Outsourcing Solutions, said when one occupies a position, realising that it is probably what’s keeping them afloat is the first thing that should be on their agenda.
“Having signed a contract, you have an obligation to honour the contract, and your morals and conscience should enable you to do the service required until better comes,” she said.
Campbell added that though issues may arise, it is best to ensure you’re in your job, rather than out of one.
Below, Campbell explains ways in which you can make the most out of your job, even when it feels like you’re working for the devil.
Exercise wisdom
Campbell said applying wisdom to every aspect of your job is a good attribute. She explained that regardless of your role, you are working for a company, so even if you believe you aren’t being noticed, you are. “Do your best,” she urged. “If you sweep the floor, sweep it well, without grumbling. The compliment you will receive may supersede the task and problems you experience.”
Maintain professionalism
She said this disparity occurs when people are in positions they would rather not be in. “Most of us don’t start out where we want to, especially early in our careers. It often becomes a gradual climbing process to our dream jobs.” However, Campbell explained that being professional and executing on your agreed deliverables in your contract is important.
Go the extra mile
“If you can deliver more than you promised or what your job requires, then do it.” Let your employers know your skill sets and you may be surprised at the opportunities that will come your way.
Be a step ahead of the game
Always try to deliver the unexpected. Campbell explained that positions will become vacant over time, and if you’re known to deliver above what’s required, you may be surprised with a promotion. Ensure excellence is delivered in all aspects of the job.
