Painful return for local racers
IT was a bad turn of events for the primary team of Peter Rae and David Summerbell Jr as they represented Jamaica at last weekend’s finale of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) in Guyana.
“My worst accident on track to date,” Rae told Auto.
In the first CMRC race of the day, on the first corner of the very first lap Rae’s Mazda was hit by one car, only to be sent into the path of another oncoming racer. The final impact speared the car across the circuit, breaking Rae’s right hand.
“I’m not sure how it broke. The impact was so violent my hand hit multiple things inside the car. I just sat there for a moment feeling the pain,” he said.
Rae’s Mazda was also in bad shape.
“The tube frame is damaged, so it will have to be put back on the jig whenever it reaches back to Jamaica,” Rae explained.
While Summerbell missed body damage, he was not to escape the bad luck and was also sidelined by mechanical failure for the rest of the meet. The bikers fared a bit better. Kyle Reynolds and David Bell came 4th and 5th respectively in the Superstock bike class. The third rider Chris Chung suffered problems that kept him in last place.
“The competition in Guyana is very strong as the bikes in the Superbike class are ridiculously fast, but we came, saw and now know what needs to be done in the future,” Reynolds remarked.
