It’s a ‘Wassy’ Gold Cup
ALEX’S Import Limited, through its brand Wassy bikes, has taken over the sponsorship of the Gold Cup Race Day, it was announced at a press conference at Caymanas Park on Tuesday.
The December 6 race card will feature the 43rd running of the Wassy Bike Gold Cup, a Grade One event for three-year-olds and upward going over seven furlongs (1,400 metres) for a purse of $1.5M (inclusive of $400,000 from the sponsor).
The day will in addition be highlighted by the annual staging of the Andrew HB Aguilar Memorial Cup (to be run in honour of Hall-of-Fame inductee Andrew HB Aguilar), a maiden event for native-bred two-year-olds going over a mile (1,600 metres).
Also on the day, one lucky groom will win for himself a CG150 Wassy Bike valued at $140,000.
Keson Ferguson, purchasing manager at Alex’s Import Ltd, said that sponsoring the Gold Cup was never in doubt.
“The decision to become involved in this venture is due to the belief that the Gold Cup would be an excellent platform to promote Wassy bikes, based on the association with horse power, speed and efficiency during race days and Wassy bikes being number one in performance, reliability and speed, and so Alex’s Import Ltd, the home of the Wassy bikes, is honoured to be on board with Caymanas Park in hosting the 43rd Gold Cup,” he said.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Caymanas Track Limited (CTL), Cedric Stewart, welcomed the sponsorship from Alex’s Import Ltd.
“Over the years, these Gold Cup events have provided tremendous excitement due to the fierce battles royal and the nail-biting finishes that characterises these races. We at Caymanas Park are particularly pleased that Alex’s Import Ltd has agreed to associate their brand, the ‘Wassy Bike’, with this event,” the CEO said.
Denzil Miller, racing secretary at CTL, gave an overview of the event and encouraged racing fans to come out and enjoy what will be an exciting day of racing.
“The Gold Cup is the most important and prestigious handicap race on the racing calendar as it brings together the best sprinters and the best stayers over 1,400 metres, which is just a little long for a sprinter and a little short for a horse that prefers more real estate,” he said.
“This year the Wassy Gold Cup will be extremely competitive as it promises to bring the Superstakes hero Typewriter, the Caribbean Sprint champion Potcheen, the Caymanas Invitational Mile winner Pete’swildone, the None-Such Sprint winner Uppa Tune, the Governor General’s Stakes winner Perfect Neighbour and the Prime Minister’s Stakes winner and defending champion Commanding Chief in what will be a race filled with speed, intrigue and excitement as the horses rush to the wire,” he ended.
