Musical tributes for Holt
IT was a farewell like no other, as the walls of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kingston reverberated to the songs of late veteran singer John Holt at his funeral on Monday.
Holt’s catologue of hits was performed by several of Jamaica’s well-known musicians, much to the delight of the congregation who filled the pews.
Karen Smith, Carlene Davis, Ken Boothe, toaster U-Roy, Boris Gardiner, The Silvertones, Luciano, George Nooks, Tinga Stewart and Hezron, as well as Holt’s two sons — John Jr and Brian — were among the performers.
“I grew up listening to all of these veterans,” dancehall singer Thriller U told the Jamaica Observer. “They were the ones who planted the trees that I am reaping from today.”
Child star-turned-minister of religion, Junior Tucker delivered the homily. Holt, 69, died in London on October 20. He was interred in the Dovecot Memorial Park in St Catherine.
