St Thomas boxers rule the ring at National Championship
ST THOMAS Boxing Gym walked away with the second National Youth Boxing Championship for boxers between the ages of 12 and 17 at the Stanley Coach Gym in Kingston on Saturday.
However, the feature bout which was fought between Jerome Ennis of Stanley Coach Gym and Davian Thomas of Boys’ Town, went to Thomas. It was Daniel Hylton of Stanley Couch Gym who was, however, voted the Most Outstanding Boxer of the championships.
Twenty-three boxers, representing seven boxing gyms islandwide, took part in a tournament that saw boxers competing over three rounds. The boxers, many of whom were fighting for the first time in a competitive situation, were made to do one-minute rounds or one-and-a-half-minute rounds based on experience and competence.
All boxers weighed-in below 48.0kg and fought either in the flyweightweight or lightflyweight divisions.
The St Thomas Gym, which seemed to do extensive work under coach Robert Napier, emerged the overall winner of the championship with two of their outstanding entrants Deveney Patterson and Carlton Reid fighting in the lightflyweight class.
The duo boxed themselves into the hearts of an appreciative audience.
“Unearthing promising boxing talents at this early age through these championships and other forms of competition should act as a fillip for the future participation of our boxers in the sport to represent Jamaica on the international scene,” Jamaica Boxing Board Association director Kingsley Goodison said.
“From these championships, young boxer scan be identified for special training in preparation for the Commonwealth Games, Pan-Am Games, CAC Games and the Olympic Games,” he added.
