J’can Bridgmohan shines with double at Churchill Downs
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CMC) — Jamaican jockey Shaun Bridgmohan continued his solid form at Churchill Downs on Sunday, when he reeled off a double on the ten-race card at the prestigious racing venue.
The 35-year-old took race three with favourite Lockout before returning to capture race four with another odds-on bet, Midnight Games, to steal his share of the headlines.
He now has 16 wins for the month-long season which wraps up November 30. He lies second behind Corey Lanerie on 26, and is only two clear of Julien Leparoux.
Bridgmohan kicked off his success in a mile trip for three-year-olds and upward, guiding Lockout to the wire two lengths clear in a time of one minute, 35.32 seconds.
Pace-setter Stormy Going opened up a six-length on the field through the half-mile run in a decent 47.24 seconds, with Bridgmohan and Lockout chasing the pace from fourth.
Once in the stretch, however, Bridgmohan got the best out of the five-year-old dark bay and he collared the leader and cleared the field to get home comfortably.
In contrast in race four, Bridgmohan made all the running with the two-year-old colt Midnight Games, to beat the two-year-olds over six furlongs.
The pair posted fractions of 22.28 and 47.07 seconds through the half-mile while trying to shake off The Lone Roo and Wings Locked Up who pressed the pace.
In the stretch, Midnight Games proved the best, prevailing under a long drive to reach the wire half-length clear of The Lone Roo.
