HUNT FOR CROWN ON
REIGNING Miss Jamaica (World) Laurie-Ann Chin is on the hunt for another crown. She is one of the finalists in the Miss World pageant in London on December 14.
In fact, she arrived in London yesterday.
Laura Butler, franchise holder for the local contest, confirmed Chin’s safe arrival in the UK. She said the queen — who is on her first visit to London — is excited about the trip and keen to represent Jamaica.
Chin, 21, was crowned earlier this year in a glittering ceremony at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St James, securing the title from a field of 20 contestants.
Her crown was stolen from her prize car — the Audi A3 sedan — during an appearance at the Ocean Style fashion event in Montego Bay last month. The car was damaged by the robbers, who took the crown and its carrying case from the vehicle’s back seat.
“We are happy Laurie-Ann was not harmed, but must give full credit to the police who were quick on the scene and the staff at ATL Motors, who replaced the broken window within two days,” said Butler.
Chin was required to take the crown to the London pageant.
Valued at just under $20,000, the one stolen has been in use since 2010 and is usually in the care of the franchise holder.
Several checks with the St James Divisonal Headquarters were unsuccessful.
Over the years, Jamaica has won the Miss World title on three occasions — Carole Joan Crawford (1963), Cindy Breakespeare (1976), and Lisa Hanna in 1993.
