Herbert Morrison make it 10 straight in U-16 basketball
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Herbert Morrison Technical cemented their favourites title in the ISSA Western Conference High School Under-16 basketball competition on Friday after beating Cornwall College 44-34 to extend their record to 10 straight wins.
Nicholas Gilchrist’s game-high 20 points was not enough for Cornwall College ,as Herbert Morrison improved their points to 20, four more than second-placed Cornwall, while defending champions Spot Valley moved up to third place on 13 points after beating Holland High.
Brendan Dawkins had another outstanding day for Herbert Morrison as he scored 17 points, 13 rebounds and four steals and assists.
Two points separated the teams after the first quarter with the visiting Herbert Morrison leading 13-11, but their big second quarter where they outscored Cornwall 13-5 made the difference as both teams scored 18 points in the second half.
Cornwall College, however, avenged their Under-19 first-round loss to their Montego Bay neigbours with a come-from-behind 58-52 win.
Herbert Morrison led 15-12 and 24-22 after the first two quarters, but the home team, led again by Andrew Johnson, took over the lead after the third quarter, 38-32, and held on despite a fourth quarter that saw both teams combine for 40 points.
Johnson scored 24 points and had 11 steals and four assists, while Rashid Davis got eight points for the winners as Ralique Grant led Herbert Morrison with 12 points, and Kuwayne Waite scored 10 points and had 10 steals.
Spot Valley had a good day, winning both games against hapless Holland High, winning 37-15 in the Under-16 and 47-25 in the Under-19 section.
Shamar Bucknor led all scorers with 15 points in the Under-16 game, while Desran Harris’ 25 points, nine steals, five rebounds and five assists led the Under-19 team.
Robert Waugh also scored 13 points and had 18 rebounds, while Hugh Smith scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds for Holland.
