What They Say! – Lorenzo Robinson
When did you start your career as a trainer?
From I was a child growing up, I wanted to be a part of racing. When I lived in St Elizabeth I would skip school just to listen the races on the radio and I would write all the results from the first to the last race and keep a record of them. After I moved to Portmore, I decided that I would fulfill my dream. I said to myself that I would own one of these animals and so I did and from there on I was involved in the sport. I left Jamaica at one point and went to Canada where I really got involved in horse racing. I then went into the training aspect of the game when I got my license in 2011.
Which horse was your first winner?
The first horse that I started, Best Director. He won in a decent time of 1:00:0 minutes for 1,000 metres round beating Exotic Gold by six-and-a-half lengths. Paul Francis was the jockey that day. It was a great feeling as I was the owner, trainer and breeder. It was like winning three races in one, just a wonder feeling. I will always remember that day.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
My longest odds winner came on February 29, 2012 when Paul Francis piloted Mississauga to victory at 30-1. Mississauga ran 1,100 metres in 1:08:0 minutes. That win was a good win for me as I always have confidence in my horses to get the job done at all times.
Which is the best horse that you have trained?
Without a doubt, Queen Paula is the best horse that I have trained so far. I won a Graded Stakes race with her when she won the Hot Line Stakes with Winston Griffiths going 1,200 metres and a Grade One event as she won the 1,000 Guineas with Andre Martin aboard. Queen Paula was a very good horse which was going places but unfortunate I lost her. But the most promising horse I have trained was Best Director as he was a horse with a lot of potential and a bright future but unfortunately I lost him as well.
Which is the best horse that you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
There have been so many good horses here but I would that Princess Popstar is the best horse that I have seen race at Caymanas Park. Princess Popstar is a very talented racehorse with a lot of class. When running as a two-year-old, she won her races impressively including the Two-Year-Old ‘Triple Crown’ with two record times. For a two-year-old to run 1:10:0 minutes for 1,200 metres that only speaks volume of her talent.
Who influenced your career the most?
Since I am in the racing industry everyone has been good to me and I thank them for it. I have always admired Philip Feanny as a breeder. The way how he handles and go about things. He is my mentor in racing. I also want to give special thanks to trainer Norman DeSousa for his guidance, encouragement and support. He is reason for my accomplishment as a trainer. DeSousa trains horses at the Woodbine racetrack in Canada.
