KSAC to name road in Easton Douglas’s honour
AMIDST the controversy dogging National Housing Trust (NHT) Chairman Easton Douglas’s involvement in the Trust’s purchase of the Outameni tourist attraction, the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) on Tuesday approved a resolution to name a road in the capital in his honour.
The road, which is to be named Easton Douglas Drive, is in Nannyville Gardens, a community in St Andrew South Eastern, the constituency Douglas represented in Parliament between 1989 and 2002.
The resolution, moved by Councillor Andrew Swaby and seconded by Councillor Audrey Smith-Facey, states that the road, which at present is unnamed, should bear the former MP’s name “in recognition of the sterling contribution he has made to the development of the Nannyville Gardens community”.
According to the councillors, Douglas, while serving as MP, “played a pivotal role in leading to the expansion of housing through the development of Mountain Court Apartments and the restoration of the Nannyville Gardens Community Centre, which has been of tremendous benefit to the citizens”.
The councillors noted that a road was created, leading to the community centre to facilitate its upgrade. However, the road has not been named, and as such residents have petitioned and advocated that appropriate steps be taken to name the road in Douglas’s honour.
The resolution concluded that “once the procedural steps are completed, a fitting and appropriate street-naming ceremony will be held”.
