Super JC win first trophy of season
JAMAICA College (JC) are the champions of the inaugural ISSA/LIME Super Cup. They defeated Holy Trinity 2-0 at Sabina Park on Saturday evening to claim their first title for the season.
Jamaica College had progressed after victories over Cornwall College, Hydel High and St Elizabeth Technical High, while Holy Trinity defeated Clarendon College, Garvey Maceo High and Wolmer’s Boys’ School.
JC were the favourites after beating Trinity twice in the season in other competitions, but Trinity had formed a reputation of being giant-killers in the Super Cup.
Both teams were in the midst of an ISSA probe following a ‘suspicious’ set of Manning Cup results, but that was all forgotten as the game got underway. The opening minutes of the game were evenly contested with each ‘keeper having to make smart saves.
However, the deadlock was broken in the 25th minute when captain Junior Flemming made a commanding run into the box, which eventually led to Donavon Segree scoring on the rebound.
From there on it was JC on the front foot, with Trinity appearing to focus more on not conceding than equalising.
Their strategy did not work, as JC scored again before half-time when Raffique Bryan converted a cross from Flemming past the Trinity ‘keeper.
The second half featured Flemming and Bryan constantly terrorising Trinity’s flanks. Trinity, on the other hand seemed to have run out of ideas with none of the creative chances flowing from Joel Sterling and friends.
Jamaica College have now collected $1 million for their efforts while Holy Trinity received $375, 000.
