Camperdown, Hydel hunt Manning Cup semi-final spots
Camperdown High and Hydel High will seek to secure one of the two semi-finals spots available in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup competition when they battle for Group K honours at the Spanish Town Prison Oval today.
The Camperdown High-Hydel encounter is scheduled to kick off at 1:00 pm, before the Group I encounter between Charlie smith High and Vauxhall High at 3:00 pm.
The East Kingston-based school is currently atop the group on six points and only require a draw to book their spot in the semis.
Coach Christopher Bender is confident that his charges can get the job done.
“We are in a group where we want to win and that is the only way we can qualify for the semi-finals, so our only focus now is getting the job done against Hydel,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Camperdown have been able to remain fluent in attack with the likes of left-winger Tajae Brown and centre-forward Andre McCatty, who could make things difficult for their opponents.
Hydel, on the other hand, are on four points and are faced with a must-win situation after playing out a 1-1 draw against St Jago High before defeating Kingston College 2-0 in their last fixture.
However, the task at hand is not beyond the Donovan Hayles-coached team as they boast two prolific strikers in Stephen Barnett and national Under-17 player Nicholas Nelson, who can do some damage if not contained.
The other Group K encounter between St Jago High and Kingston College will be played at Constant Spring field at 1:00 pm and will be one of academic interest as niether team is in with a chance of qualifying.
Meanwhile, Charlie Smith High (four points) currently lead Group I with a superior goal difference ahead of Innswood High (four points), who will come a hunting as they seek to secure the next semi-final spot.
Having defeated Vauxhall High earlier in the season, the Jerome Waite-coached outfit will be brimming with confidence of once again brushing aside their opponents, which will put them in pole position regardless of the outcome in the other game. Striker Bebeto McDonald is once again finding his goalscoring form. McDonald, alongwith Chevon Crooks and Kirmany Arbouine, should apply the pressure to their opponents’ defensive line.
The Innswood High versus Norman Manley High encounter will be the feature game at Constant Spring field at 3:00 pm. Innswood are in with a grand chance of advancing, however, they will have to score more goals than Charlie Smith if they are victorious.
