Western showdown!
MONTEGO BAY, ST James — THE Professional Footballer Association of Jamaica (PFAJ), organisers of the Flow Champions Cup Knockout competition, could be forced to find a new venue and a new date for the final of the island’s top knockout competition, after western clubs Reno FC and Montego Bay United won Sunday’s semi-finals.
Reno FC scored a thrilling 9-8 sudden-death penalty-kick win over Harbour View FC, after they played out a 1-1 draw. Montego Bay United beat Portmore United 6-5, also on sudden-death penalties, after being goalless in regulation and extra time, resulting in the first all-western Flow Champions Cup finals.
The finals were originally scheduled for November 16 at Harbour View, but with two western clubs taking part, the organisers could be seeking to play the game in western Jamaica.
Additionally, during the original dates, the Caribbean Football Union’s Men’s Championships will be in its final stages in Montego Bay and venues would not be available.
On Sunday, it took heroics from Reno FC’s makeshift goalkeeper Coden Smikle to see them into the finals.
Smikle, who plays at wingback, was forced to take over the goalkeeping duties after starting goalkeeper Dennis Taylor became the second member of the Reno FC team to be red-carded, this after the team made its three changes.
Smikle started his string of heroics by saving the penalty kick that Taylor had given up — when he was booked — preserving a 1-1 scoreline and then scored his penalty kick in the shoot-out.
Smikle then saved the final penalty kick taken by Harbour View’s goalkeeper Michaud Barrett.
Earlier, a mistake by Taylor had resulted in Harbour View taking the lead through Jermie Lyn in the 44th minute before Romaine Lewis equalised in the 68th minute with a vicious free kick.
In the second game, Montego Bay United were held 0-0 by Portmore United who were relegated from the Premier League last season
After one player from each team missed one penalty kick in the shoot-out, goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett scored one kick then saved one to send his team to back-to-back national finals.
