STETHS remain on course to defend D’Cup title
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical will continue the defence of their two titles, the ISSA/LIME daCosta and Ben Francis Knockout, after they qualified for the semi-final with a 1-0 win over Petersfield High in their finals quarter-final round game in Santa Cruz yesterday.
Three other former champions in Clarendon College, Glenmuir High and Dinthill Technical also joined STETHS in the last four, all semi-finalists completing perfect records in the quarter-final with wins yesterday.
In next Wednesday’s Ben Francis KO semi-finals, Glenmuir take on Dinthill Technical in one game, while STETHS and Clarendon College meet in the other with the winners making it to the final set for November 15.
The daCosta Cup semi-finals set for November 21 and 22 will see Glenmuir facing Clarendon College in one game and STETHS taking on Dinthill Technical in the other.
Yesterday, STETHS, who were facing a must-win situation in Group R and were coming off a big loss to Jamaica College in the LIME Super Cup four days ago, rose to the occasion and turned back Petersfield High 1-0.
Donjay Smith scored his ninth goal since the start of the Inter-zone round, a first-half penalty kick, to give STETHS the crucial points as they extended their season and qualified for the sixth straight daCosta Cup semi-final and fifth in the Ben Francis KO.
Clarendon College were expected to be pushed by Frome Technical, who were seeking to return to the semi-finals, but goals from Seigel Knight, Craighton Charlton, Dane Bennett and Kemoy Caruthers took the Jackie Walters-coached team to an easy win in Group S.
Glenmuir High, the 2012 champions, won Group P after edging Old Harbour High 1-0 through a goal from Ricardo Dennis, while Dinthill Technical turned back Kemps Hill High 2-0 with goals from Rudave Murray and Andre Beckford.
Manchester High, which started the season on a high and were expected to contend for a title, ended on a whimper with just one point and were beaten 2-1 yesterday by Godfrey Stewart.
Cornwall College, who emerged as a potential semi-finalists after a perfect first round, finished their season on a high beating Lacovia High 3-0 at Jarrett Park with Alrick Ottey scoring twice in the first half and substitute Demario Fowler scoring in his final schoolboy game with a late strike.
Last year’s beaten finalists, Garvey Maceo beat Marcus Garvey 2-1, while St James High also beat Cedric Titus High 2-1.
