ISSA investigates goal deluge in schoolboy football
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Following what appears to be a travesty in schoolboy football, the ruling Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) have launched a probe into the 16-0 and 12-0 victories recorded by Jamaica College (JC) and Excelsior High on Wednesday.
JC thumped Denham Town 16-0 and advanced to the semi-final of the Manning Cup on goal difference ahead Excelsior, which trounced Holy Trinity High 12-0 in Group J action played at the Constant Spring and Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex simultaneously.
George Forbes, ISSA’s Competition’s Director, said he has received several calls to his office following Wednesday’s games.
“We are not satisfied with the performances of the teams and the results, so we have launched an investigation as to why we would have gotten a 16-0 and a 12-0 result from teams with equal ability,” Forbes told OBSERVER ONLINE.
“Six goals in six minutes and 12 goals and 16 goals…the stakeholders are not happy with it,” he noted.
Defending champions JC got into the semi-finals ahead of Excelsior by a mere three goals in which 28 goals were scored in what is clearly a mockery of local football.
Six of the goals were scored in the six minutes of added time, which resulted in JC advancing through goal difference.
Excelsior finished with seven points, the same as JC. They started the day on top of the group with a plus two-goal difference and finished with plus 14 while JC ended with plus 17 and assumed top spot.
