Wolmer’s face tough Georg’s for Manning Cup semi-final spot
WOLMER’S Boys’ High could clinch a spot in the semi-final of the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup when they take on St George’s College (STGC) at Constant Spring field today at 3:00 pm.
Wolmer’s lead Group H with maximum six points, two ahead of St George’s College, and with only the group winner advancing, the boys from Heroes Circle need only a draw to progress to the semi-final.
In the curtain raiser at 1:00 pm, Haile Selassie on one point play the pointless Calabar High as both teams hunt their first win of the second round to end their Manning Cup campaign on a winning note.
Having been unceremoniously dumped out of the LIME Super Cup just two days ago, head coach Ludlow Bernard will have to lift his Wolmer’s team both physically and mentally for probably their biggest game of the season so far.
Bernard told the Jamaica Observer he requested a postponement of the match from ISSA, but to no avail. He will, however, not complain because he knew before hand of the congested fixture.
“We have to put things in place to enable us to perform come tomorrow (today). It doesn’t make sense we squeal about it. After the competition we can complain and put measures in place to avoid these eventualities come next year,” said Bernard.
Wolmer’s will be boosted by the fact that they registered a convincing 3-0 win over St George’s College in the quarter-final of the Super Cup last week.
But despite that win and knowing they only need a point from the game, Bernard said he doesn’t know how to play for a draw.
“It is something very difficult, especially when dealing with schoolboys. The discipline that is going to be required to deal with something like that will be extremely difficult to extract from young players,” he pointed out.
He continued: “However, that doesn’t mean that we are not going to be strong defensively, clearly we will have our defensive tactics. So it may very well be a counter-attacking game because we expect St George’s to come and they will be stronger tomorrow.”
Wolmer’s will be missing the services of Chavez Brooks through injury from Saturday’s loss to Holy Trinity and again they will be depending on the skilful Cory Bennett, Jaheel Hyde, Demar Rose, Hakeem Smith, Rojay Smith to guide them into the semi-final.
The Light Blue of North Street seemed to have lost a little of their cutting edge, but showed that they are still potent with a 5-1 win over Calabar last week. STGC will be welcoming back the talented midfielder Alex Marshall, who was voted MVP of the just-concluded Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-17 Champion-ship in Haiti, and with the likes of Amoy Brown, Shevon Stewart and Gregory Messam Jnr, they have a lethal strike force second to none and could secure that crucial win they need to advance to the semi-final ahead of Wolmer’s Boys.
