St George’s return to winning ways, Wolmer’s keep rolling
Many-time champions St George’s College returned to winning ways when they got by Calabar High, while Wolmer’s Boys continued their unbeaten run with victory over Haile Selassie High in second-round action of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup football competition yesterday.
Wolmer’s easily disposed of Haile Selassie High 4-0, while St George’s College came from behind to topple Calabar High 5-1 in the feature game of the Group H double-header at Prison Oval field.
Wolmer’s continue to lead the standing on six points, two ahead of St George’s College on four points. Haile Selassie remain in third position on one point, while Calabar are yet to gain a point and are currently sitting at the foot of the table.
The St George’s, Calabar clash was expected to be a thrilling encounter and it lived up to its billing as the large crowd that weathered the rainy conditions was treated to four goals in an action-packed first-half.
Calabar started more purposefully and controlled the first 10 minutes of play. Kevane Thompson sent them in front in the sixth minute when he headed home a well-weighted corner kick from Brandon Webster.
The Red Hills Road-based boys’ dogged intent on attack resulted in them succumbing to the counter-attack when Amoy Brown staved off two defenders and slotted home a nice left-footed shot to give St George’s the equaliser in the 12th minute.
The North Street-based team went 2-1 up in the 37th minute courtesy of a beautifully struck free kick by Gregory Messam Jr from just outside the 18-yard box.
It was all St George’s from that point onward and the slippery Shevon Stewart went on a menacing run down the left flank before picking out Brown, who easily converted in the 39th minute to complete his brace and put his team 3-1 up at the break.
The ‘Georgians’ maintained their dominance after the resumption and went further ahead in the 50th minute when Stewart picked up a pass from Brown and fired home from close range.
And the game was put to bed when Messam Jr forced an own goal in the 64th minute, as Calabar were overwhelmed.
The opening game between the improving Haile Selassie High and Wolmer’s Boys was expected to be a good contest. However, it turned out to be a stroll in the park for the Heroes Circle-based boys. Joshua McNaught opened the scoring in the eighth minute and Jaheel Hyde made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute. Rajay Smith extended the lead four minutes after the resumption before Khori Bennett sealed the win in the 69th minute.
