Champs STETHS among D’Cup semi-final hopefuls
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and three former champions Glenmuir High, Dinthill Technical and Clarendon College, as well as Petersfield High all kept their hopes of a place in the semi-finals of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup alive after scoring successive quarter-final wins yesterday.
With only the winners of the four quarter-final groups advancing to the semi-finals, next week Wednesday’s final set of matches are expected to be exciting with at least seven schools still in contention.
Manchester High and Kemps Hill, losers last week, will meet in a rescheduled game this afternoon at Juici Field as they hope to revive their chances of advancing.
Yesterday, despite beating St James High 2-0 at home at the St Elizabeth Technical Sport Complex, the champions are second in Group R on goal difference to Petersfield High who ran roughshod over Cedric Titus High, whipping them 9-2 at Frome.
Donjay Smith and Sean Genus were the scorers for STETHS, who had beaten Cedric Titus 5-1 in the first game, but must beat Petersfield on Saturday if they are to advance to the semi-finals of the daCosta Cup for the sixth straight time.
At Frome, three players — Akeem Whyte, Malic Reid and Lushein Esson — all scored two goals each. Also scoring a goal each were Donovan Brown, Romaine Wright and Jason McIntosh.
Cedric Titus were able to field just five regular starters from the squad that was ravaged by the Chikungunya virus and have been eliminated from consideration.
Two second-half goals from David Givans led Glenmuir to a 3-1 win over Lacovia in their Group P top-of-the-table game at STETHS and are virtually into the top four.
Kevon Lambert had given Glenmuir the lead after 28 minutes with a delightful lob over the head of the Lacovia goalkeeper, while Givans scored in the 46th and 60th minutes in the second half that was played mostly in driving rain.
Dinthill Technical proved their win over Manchester High last week was no fluke as they beat Godfrey Stewart High 2-1 in their Group Q game at Dinthill.
Zachary Brown and Rujae Jackson scored for Dinthill Technical, who will advance with a draw against Kemps Hill next week.
Xhane Reid, Creighton Charlton and Seigel Knight scored for Clarendon College in their close 3-2 win over Garvey Maceo in a big all-Clarendon clash at Jamalco in Group S.
Garvey Maceo came from behind twice to tie up the scores, but Clarendon College, who had beaten Marcus Garvey Technical 5-0 in their first game, proved too strong.
At Jarrett Park Cornwall College, who played 42 minutes with 10 players after Odaine Lewis was sent off, beat Old Harbour 2-1, thanks to an added-time goal from Geovannie Reid.
Jourdaine Fletcher had given Cornwall College the lead after just two minutes, but Raheem Irving levelled for Old Harbour in the 12th.
In another game, Marcus Garvey and Frome Technical played out to a 1-1 draw.
