Big clashes highlight D’Cup today
LINSTEAD, St Catherine — Two top-of-the-group clashes will highlight today’s second and penultimate set of matches as the quarter-finals of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football competition continue with eight matches in four groups.
Giant killers Dinthill Technical and Godfrey Stewart High will meet at Dinthill in Linstead in Group Q after winning their opening games last week, while Lacovia High and Glenmuir High will meet in a Group P game at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.
Meanwhile, four other schools led by defending champions St Elizabeth Technical will also be seeking a second straight win as they move closer to a place in the semi-finals of both the daCosta Cup and the Ben Francis Knockout competitions.
STETHS, Petersfield High, Clarendon College and Frome Technical were winners last week, and with only the four group winners advancing, points will be at a premium for the teams today.
Dinthill Technical, who won two titles in 1979 and 1981, surprised Manchester High 1-0 last week and will be full of confidence going into today’s game at home.
Godfrey Stewart High, the 2005 winners are however the Group Q leaders on goal difference after blanking Kemps Hill 3-0 in their opening game. A draw would favour Godfrey Stewart staying on top as even a win for either Manchester High or Kemps Hill in the other game, would not be able to overhaul them.
Lacovia High continue to defy the odds as they lead Group P after a big 3-1 win over Old Harbour to lead Glenmuir High, who carved out a good 2-0 win over the previously unbeaten Cornwall College.
The venue could prove advantageous to Lacovia, as they will be less than five miles from home and would have played at that venue more than once already this season.
Meanwhile, despite their crowded schedule having played two rounds of the LIME Super Cup and are the only daCosta Cup outfit still in contention for the $1-million winners’ prize, STETHS should be strong enough at home to beat St James High.
A week ago, STETHS blitzed Cedric Titus 5-1 and will face a St James team that were beaten 2-1 by Petersfield High at Jarrett Park.
Petersfield will be at Frome Sports Grounds against a Cedric Titus team that will be desperate for a win.
Clarendon College will also start favourites to beat a Garvey Maceo team coming off a disastrous loss in the second round of the LIME Super Cup where they had three players sent off.
Despite travelling to Drax Hall, Frome Technical will be too strong for Marcus Garvey and should set up a winner-take-all game against Clarendon College on Saturday.
