Scotia clip JNBS to cop inter-bank football league title
SCOTIABANK clipped Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) 1-0 on Sunday as the final round of the
2014 Western Sports-sponsored Norman Goodison Inter-Bank Football League competition was completed at Emmet Park, St George’s Colleges.
Scotiabank only needed a draw to retain their league title having won their seventh straight Norman Goodison Trophy. They had to work hard for their victory, as JNBS needed to defeat them by a large margin.
Jamoy Sibblies got a glorious opportunity to put Scotiabank ahead in the 12th minute as Donovan Hibbert was fouled in the 18-yard box by defender Marvin McNneil. The resulting spot kick was parried away by a diving goalkeeper Javon Spence.
The remainder of the half saw both teams squandering numerous scoring chances. Scotiabank got the all-important goal in the 71st minute when Sibblies got away from his marker on the left wing and crossed to captain Stefan Bartley, who shot past Spence.
In the curtain raiser, the Lenworth Hyde-coached Sagicor and NCB drew 1-1. Radcliffe Whitter gave Sagicor the lead in the 58th minute, but Mahaish Alexander replied in the 81st minute to level the score.
In the lone match at NWC playing field, Mona, JMMB got their first victory of the season when they defeated the fancied Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) 3-1. Dwayne Smith gave BOJ the lead in the 42nd minute, but on the resumption Gavin Baker got the equaliser in the 46th minute.
Swain Pusey made it 2-1 in the 67th minute and Kareem Roberts scored the third goal in the 79th minute as JMMB closed out their season on a high.
The competition continues with the playing of the Jam Clear Cup next Sunday with JNBS playing Sagicor. The Jam Clear Cup is contested between the second to fourth-placed teams, with the winner meeting Scotiabank for the champion of champion trophy.
