Ugly win better than pretty loss — STETHS coach
ST ELIZABETH Technical High School football coach Omar Wedderburn said his team’s mantra in the narrow win over Camperdown High on Saturday was one of getting a result rather than focusing on playing style.
STETHS’s 2-1 victory at Sabina Park, thanks to goals from Donjay Smith and Rohan Lindsay, propelled them into the semi-final of ISSA/LIME Super Cup Knock-out competition.
The Camperdown team, which largely dictated the tempo of the game without enough end product, scored via Kevin Clarke.
“We played well, but such is the game. That cutting edge to make the difference and score the goals to finish the game, we just didn’t have it. We are proud of how the guys played,” said Christopher Bender, head coach of Camperdown.
“I thought we were the better team over 90 minutes, but I don’t think we were sharp in the two thirds; our defensive third and their defensive third.”
Wedderburn, who guided STETHS to the rural area daCosta Cup title last season, saw his team accomplish the win by scoring from a pair of dead-ball situations.
“It was a hard fought game as we imagined. We don’t really come into the game to assess the quality of the playing. We assess the scoring, because the more goals you score you have a better chance to win the game.
“We never worried about the passing of the football because we just come to represent country [schools]. We trained long and hard at set pieces, so each time they come up we always think about a goal,” he said.
Earlier, former Manning Cup champions Camperdown dominated proceedings in the first half, creating several chances, however it was STETHS who came closest to scoring.
A speculative shot from STETHS player Jovoney Brown was mishandled by nervous-looking Camperdown goalkeeper Javanni Wray and deflected onto the crossbar. Outside of that opportunity, STETHS barely ventured into the Camperdown final third with any purposeful intent.
However, one such attack led to the opener for the Santa Cruz-based school in the 45th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick after a clumsy challenge inside the 18-yard box.
Smith’s effort was confidently struck and gave Wray no chance.
Camperdown, who according to Bender, had to shuffle their defensive set-up due to injuries, equalised seconds later in the first minute of first half stoppage time when Ramiesh McKnight dribbled menacingly into the area and passed for Clarke to tap home.
The second half brought much of the same as Camperdown held an edge in enterprise. But the very fit STETHS players gradually came into their own and pushed back Camperdown, while creating a few openings.
The winner came in the 78th minute when Wray let a corner kick from Lindsay escape his grasp. The ball bounced behind him and into the goal.
STETHS will face Jamaica College
in next week’s semi-final, while an
all-Manning Cup clash will ensue in
the final four games with Wolmer’s Boys facing surprise package Holy Trinity High.
