Wolmer’s shock St George’s to progress in LIME Cup
Wolmer’s Boys and Holy Trinity High secured their spot in the semi-final of the LIME Super Cup after recording victories in their respective quarter-final encounters at the National Stadium yesterday.
Holy Trinity High blanked eight-man Garvey Maceo High 4-0, while Wolmer’s scored a 3-0 win over St George’s College in the feature game of the double-header.
The thrilling contest was expected to be a close one, but Wolmer’s outplayed their North Street-based opponents, who were barely given a chance to look at goal.
A brace by Jaheel Hyde in the 31st and 72nd minutes and a 11th-minute strike by Joshua McNaught got the job done for the Heroes’ Circle boys.
It was end-to-end stuff for the first five minutes of play, but Wolmer’s were the first to settle in attack and broke the deadlock when McNaught slotted home from close range after picking up a pass from Shaquille McKay. Hyde then produced a nice run down the left flank and skipped by a defender before hitting pass Cordel Irving in goal for St George’s to put Wolmer’s 2-0 up at the break.
The second half was more evenly contested as both teams were more composed, despite failing to create goal-scoring chances. The only highlight of the half came when Hyde skipped by four defenders before rifling a right-footed shot in the back of the net to seal the win.
Winning coach Ludlow Bernard said that steady defensive work paved the way for the victory.
“What stood out for us was our defensive operation, this is a game that we needed to be strong defensively, and we did that very well today (yesterday),” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Meanwhile, Neville ‘Bertis’ Bell felt his team was beaten by a well-organised Wolmer’s team.
“Congrats to Wolmer’s, I thought we were beaten by a much better team today (yesterday); I thought Wolmer’s played really well. They scored a couple of goals and that third goal by Jaheel was a wonderful goal and they just came at us today and we just didn’t respond,” he lamented.
The opening game between Holy Trinity and Garvey Maceo was nothing short of excitement as the South Camp Road-based school went rampant on their Clarendon-based opponents. Substitute Andre Leslie with a brace in the 66th and 81st minutes, while Tevin Rochester (31st) and Joel Sterling (71st) scored the other goals to frustrate Garvey Maceo, who finished the game with eight players after Atlee Murray, Denton Watson and Roshane Sharpe were all shown the red card.
The action-packed encounter was evenly contested for the first 25 minutes, but Holy Trinity took control of the contest thereafter when Rochester converted from the penalty spot after displaying some nippy footwork before being brought down inside the area by Kyle Reid.
The Devon Anderson-coached boys extended their lead after the resumption when Garvey Maceo’s goalkeeper Steve Wallace made a mess of Leslie’s 25-yard free kick and watched in dispair as the ball rolled into the net.
It became 3-0 five minutes later, when Joel Sterling finished a beautiful half-volley from close range, before Leslie outsprinted two defenders and easily slotted home to complete his brace and the win for Trinity.
