Super showdowns highlight Lime Cup quater-final round
THE National Stadium and Sabina Park will once again come alive when they host what should be four mouth-watering encounters in the LIME Super Cup Knockout Competition quarter-final round today as eight teams continue their hunt for the $1-million prize.
All-island champions Jamaica College will once again come face-to-face with rivals Hydel High in what should be a nail-biting contest scheduled for 3:00 pm to get the ball rolling at Sabina Park.
The Old Hope Road-based boys have been the most dominant urban area team, having brushed aside all opponents all season, including Hydel High who they defeated 2-1 in the urban Walker Cup knockout semi-final.
The Miguel Coley-coached outfit passed their sternest test to date when they got by daCosta Cup outfit Cornwall College 2-1 in the opening encounter last week.
JC will be favoured to maintain their unbeaten record, and if not on weary legs should again prove a difficult task for the Donovan Hayles-coached Hydel High who will be brimming with confidence, hoping to turn the tables.
The feature game at the venue will see daCosta Cup champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) going up against a well-rounded Camperdown High team at 5:00 pm. Both teams came out easy winners in their last encounter, defeating Denham Town High and Dinthill Technical High 5-0 and 3-0, respectively.
It should be a humdinger as both teams seem evenly poised. But it is the East Kingston team who have been on the lips of most and it will be no surprise if they were to defeat their more decorated opponents.
Meanwhile, many-time champions St George’s College, who have already booked their spot in the Walker Cup knockout final, will meet Wolmer’s Boys in the feature game at the National Stadium set to kick off at 5:00 pm.
The high-riding ‘Georgians’ easily disposed of Godfrey Stewart High 5-1, but struggled against Haile Selassie High in the Manning Cup competition recently. The North Street team did play without a few key players in that contest and will not be easily beaten if back to full strength.
However, Wolmer’s are a more formidable opponent and can spring a few surprises in attack. The Heroes’ Circle boys showed gut and determination when coming from behind to defeat St James High 3-1, and if able to produce a similar or even better performance, then fans will be treated to an explosive encounter.
The first match of the double-header will see Clarendon-based Garvey Maceo High battling the ever improving Holy Trinity High at 3:00 pm.
