Dinthill surprise Manchester High in D’Cup quarter-finals
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) were the biggest winners on the day as the quarter-final stage of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition got under way yesterday.
The Omar Wedderburn-coached STETHS eased by Cedric Titus 5-1 at Drax Hall in St Ann to assume pole position in Zone R, ahead of Petersfield High, who blanked St James High 2-0 at Jarrett Park.
However, the surprise result of the round came at the Kirkvine Sports Club in Mandeville, where former champions Dinthill Technical upset highly fancied Manchester High 1-0, courtesy of a second-half penalty from Rodane Murray.
The St Catherine-based Dinthill joined another former champion Godfrey Stewart at the top of Zone Q after the Westmoreland school stopped Kemps Hill 3-0 at Frome Sports Complex.
“We knew that, playing at home, the Manchester High team would start fast so we decided to hold our own and go for the win late in the game,” said Dorian Card, the Dinthill assistant coach, who added: “We have two home games now, so we are just going to head home and prepare for those encounters.”
In other games, Lacovia High defeated Old Harbour High 3-1 at Jamalco, while Frome Technical edged Garvey Maceo 2-1 at Frome.
Meanwhile, quarter-final action continues today with a rescheduled double-header at Juici Park in Clarendon.
In the first game at 1:00 pm, Clarendon College face Marcus Garvey Technical, while Glenmuir High host Cornwall College in the feature contest at 3:00.
